Thursday 24th Krakow (salt mines)

Today we went on a tour of the Wieliczka salt mines; these are still in use today and like a huge amount of places we have seen so far are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. We both joke saying the list must be pretty extensive and would take years to read. Throughout the kilometres and kilometres of mines (we walked through 3km) there are various carvings made from solid salt, this became a tradition with the miners hundreds of years ago. The most amazing piece is a huge church which took two miners 67 years to carve, it measures 54m by 17m and is 12m high and resulted in the removal of 20,000 tonnes of salt.
